Six Mile Bridge Incident, county Clare

"When a general election was called for the summer of 1852 Bishop Vaughn asked the people to support candidates who would be advocates of religious and civil liberty and tenant right. Voting at this time was still public, with a small number of polling stations in each constituency. One of the Clare centres was in Sixmilebridge. A group of militia was escorting eighteen voters, tenants of the Marquis of Conyngham, into the village where they were expected to vote for Colonel Vandeleur, the conservative opponent of the tenant right candidates. As they approached the courthouse a hostile crowd hissed and pelted stones at the soldiers and eventually burst through the guard, dragging away a few of the voters. Under orders from a magistrate the soldiers then fired on the crowd, killing six and wounding several others, one of whom later died. Most of the dead were from the vicinity of Newmarket-on-Fergus. Michael Clune, parish priest at Sixmilebridge, had a narrow escape when a bullet went through his hat and grazed his temple"
[The Diocese of Killaloe: 1800-1850 by Ignatius Murphy (pp236-237) ]

The Six Mile Bridge Incident was reported in the Anglo-Celt on August 12, 1852. The article accused the men of the 31st foot, of willful and deliberate murder. On April 7, 1853 the proprietor of the Anglo-Celt was served with an official notice from the Crown Office, Dublin, to surrender on Monday the 18th of April, instant, to abide judgment in the case of the Queen v. Wallace. The proprietor, Zachariah WALLACE, was eventually convicted of libel and served six months in the Cavan goal in 1853.

The Anglo-Celt Defence Fund

Said fund was established to help Zachariah WALLACE with legal costs. A list of subscribers first appears in the Anglo-Celt of December 23, 1852. This list was transcribed in three parts, (1), (2) and (3), and submitted to the IRL-CAVAN-L mailing list by Kay Stanton.

The transcriptions hereafter are the subscriptions as printed in the Anglo-Celt issues from Jan 6, 1853 through Nov 10, 1853 as transcribed by Karen Hart Anthony. With each issue of the Anglo-Celt succesive to December 23, 1852 the list grows as new names are added. In some instances names are dropped.

The Secretary begs to acknowledge the receipt of the under-mentioned sums for the above fund from the ladies and gentlemen whose names are attached: --

PROSECUTION OF THE "ANGLO-CELT"

A Committee of the friends of Mr. Wallace, Proprietor of the Anglo-Celt Newspaper, having been formed in Cavan for the purpose of receiving a Fund towards defraying the Fine of £50 imposed on him buy the Court of Queen’s Bench, as well as to assist in meeting the enormous expenses incurred in his defense against a State Prosecution, respectfully solicit subscriptions for those objects.

The Committee confidently appeal to a generous and Patriotic Public to assist them in the cause they have undertaken. The case of Mr. Wallace is one of extreme rigour, with the leading particulars of which the Public are already well acquainted.

As the term of imprisonment is now fast drawing to a close, the prompt assistance and influence of Mr. Wallace’s friends are most respectfully and earnestly solicited.

Communications and Subscriptions addressed to the Secretary, Dr. P. Kelly, Globe Hotel, Cavan, will be duly and gratefully acknowledged.

The Secretary thankfully acknowledges the receipt of the following sums, and earnestly asks the prompt assistance of others, as there is not now a moment to lose: --
