The Pilot [Boston, Mass.], 5 February 1848
MURDER IN ULSTER. On Monday, the 20th inst., an inquest was held at the police barrack, Tandragee, on the body of William Greer, one of the civil bill officers of the county Armagh, before Mr. Young, one of the coroners ; when after a lengthened and minute investigation, which lasted ten hours, a verdict of wilful murder was returned against a man named Thomas Spears, an attested recruit in the Royal Artillery, and against a woman named Margaret Spears for aiding and assisting in the murder. It appeared in evidence that the unfortunate man went to the lands of Cornascriebe, within about two miles of Tandragee, on the 8th inst., to serve a civil bill process on a man named James Spears, and after serving it, Thomas Spears and Margaret Spears ran at him, and seized a blackthorn staff which Greer carried, and took it from him—and that with the same staff Thomas Spears beat him in a most inhuman manner. He lingered until Friday, the 17th inst., when he died. He has left a widow and four infant children totally unprovided for.
AWFUL MURDER.—Castlebar, December 12.—On the night of Monday last a most brutal attack was made on a carman named named Hennely, near the bridge in this town, by some ruffians who lay in wait for him. Together with fracturing him in two places they broke his jaw in pieces. The assassins were pursued and two of them were taken by the townspeople and handed over to the police. We understand a third person was captured yesterday. The poor man, after being dressed by Dr. MacGreal, was removed to the Tyrawley Hotel, where he died yesterday morning of his wounds. In the afternoon of that day two more were taken into custody by the police and lodged in gaol. The body now lies in town waiting the coroner. The deceased was a very comfortable and respectable country farmer. He has left a young wife and three small children to deplore his loss.
