| The system which has been pursued of hiring girls in the
old country, and consigning them to parties here is about to be stopped, it
having come to the knowledge of the agent that this is only a plan for decoying
poor girls from their homes in Ireland for the worst of purposes. On Monday a
person claiming to be a friend of two young girls who he said were consigned to
him, was recognised as a notorious keeper of a house of ill-fame, and the girls
were not permitted to leave Castle Garden.—New York Sun. |

DEATH BY DROWNING

| A labourer named Thomas Brown, who lived at Ballinta, near
Croom, went on, we believe, Thursday of last week, to a quarry convenient, to
wash his face, and unfortunately overbalanced himself and fell into the deep
pool, and was drowned ; his body was found next day, and Dr. Murphy held an
inquest, when a verdict in accordance with the circumstances was found. |
